In January, 1970, 48 classes in primary schools in Northumberland had more than 40 on the register and 361 classes in secondary schools were taught as groups of over420W 30. Information about individual districts is not readily available in my Department.

Mr. Rhodes asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the sum total of primary schoolchildren in school classes of over 35 pupils in the constituency of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, East, at the commencement of winter term 1970 and at the commencement of spring term 1971, respectively.
