HC Deb 02 February 1971 vol 810 cc304-5W
52. Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total cost to public funds of supplementary benefits paid to the families of persons involved in the recent Scottish bakery strike, plus administrative arrangements necessitated thereby.

Mr. Dean

Supplementary benefit payments during the dispute totalled £14,200. Payments to the former strikers on return to work added another £1,900 to this. The administrative cost of paying this sum out is estimated to be about £1,000.

53. Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total cost to public funds of supplementary benefit payments to strikers and their families during 1970; and what was the percentage increase or decrease which this figure represented over the corresponding figures for 1969 and 1964, respectively.

Mr. Dean

During 1970 supplementary benefit payments to strikers' families during disputes approached £1.5 million, about twice as much as in 1969 and almost 30 times as much as in 1964. During 1970 rather more than £1 million should be added for payments to former strikers and their families on return to work.
