HC Deb 02 February 1971 vol 810 c350W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether, in view of the Government's policy of trying to limit wage and salary scales and increases in income up to a 10 per cent. maximum, he will refuse any further increases above 10 per cent. in the salaries and pensions of the higher-paid civil servants and other state employees and former employees in the higher-income range.

Mr. David Howell

Any future pay increases for public servants in the higher-income range will need to be very carefully considered in the light of all relevant factors and taking into account the Government's policy of reducing pay settlements below their present highly inflationary levels. The adjustment of public service pensions after retirement raises quite different considerations, and I announced the Government's proposals in my statement of 17th November.
