HL Deb 08 April 1971 vol 317 cc519-20WA
LORD O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish the precise date on which the M.R.C. carried out the tests with which Her Majesty's Government attempt to substantiate the lethargy about lead in petrol.

LORD MOWBRAY AND STOURTON

The advice of Her Majesty's Government on the subject of airborne lead is derived from a survey carried out by Medical Research Council over the period March 6, 1962, to March 1, 1963. The results of the survey were published in theBritish Journal of Industrial Medicine, Volume 22, No. 136 (1965). Her Majesty's Government are arranging for further measurements to be taken.

LORD O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they accept that omission of lead from petrol reduces hydrocarbon emissions.

LORD MOWBRAY AND STOURTON

Her Majesty's Government are advised that it is the design characteristics of an engine that influence the emission of hydrocarbons, not the presence or absence of lead in the fuel it uses.
