asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why, as abolition of attendance allowances for Peers would save £14,000 per annum, he will not seek to end it, thus assisting the Government's policy of reducing State expenditure.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I do not believe that it would be right to withdraw the arrangements which enable Peers to recover, within a daily limit, their actual out-of-pocket expenses incurred in attending sittings of the House.
