HC Deb 23 November 1970 vol 807 c39W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give details of the income tax and surtax paid on 1st November, 1970, by a man with wife having an annual salary of £9,800 per annum, and on the basis of this rising to £14,000 per annum on 1st January, 1971; what will be the tax then paid; and by how much the tax payments will be reduced as from April, 1971, when the proposed tax reductions are made.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The income tax and surtax payable for 1970–71 by a man entitled only to the married man's allowance on a salary of £10,850 for that year is £4,809; and the income tax and surtax payable by him for 1970–71 on a salary of £14,000 would be £7,263, which will be reduced by about £300 for 1971–72 when the standard rate of tax is reduced to 38.75 per cent. The surtax taken into account in these calculations is at current (i.e. 1969–70) rates.
