HC Deb 04 November 1970 vol 805 cc351-2W
20. Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards the proposed Thames flood barrage.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Government consider the need to construct a moveable barrier to be urgent and agree with the view of the Greater London Council that the right site is at Silvertown in Woolwich Reach.

The Greater London Council are being asked to press ahead both with detailed site investigation and also with the completion of their remaining studies. Detailed design work will begin as soon as a decision can be taken on the type of barrier.
