Mr. Burden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total number of civil servants employed in Treasury-controlled departments in 1964, and the annual cost; what were the figures on 31st December, 1968; and what were the relevant figures on 30th April, 1970.

The figures cover the Treasury, the subordinate departments borne on its Vote, and the Rating of Government Property Department. The staff numbers in respect of 1st January, 1969 and 1st April, 1970, and the salary figures for 1968–69 and 1969–70 reflect the setting up of the Civil Service Department on 1st November 1968 and the provision from that date of a separate Vote for the Cabinet Office.
