86. Mr. Spriggs

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether local authority applications for sewerage scheme grants or loans are made in any way conditions upon a long-term policy for the full treatment of sewerage; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell:

My right hon. Friend would only sanction a loan or grant for an inland sewerage scheme if full treatment were provided for the sewage before it was discharged to a non-tidal river. With discharges to the sea or to estuaries the important point is usually the distance from land at which the discharge takes place.
