55. Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the number of men rejected from the Ulster Defence Regiment on grounds of age, medical standard and inability to fulfil the requirements of the new force, respectively, to the nearest date.

Mr. Hattersley

As at 20th March, 336 applications to join the Ulster Defence Regiment had been rejected. It is not our custom to publish an analysis of the reasons why applications to join the Army are not accepted.

57. Sir Knox Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the cost to date of publicising the Ulster Defence Regiment.

£29,655 has been spent on newspaper and television advertisements and the production of leaflets.
