HC Deb 12 March 1970 vol 797 c363W
61. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the large profits being made by private security firms; and, as a means of obtaining revenue to enable better salaries to be paid to the police and thus encourage recruitment and to ensure competition between private and state industry, if he will introduce legislation to enable the Metropolitan and general police forces to undertake these types of activities on a profit-making basis.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

As my hon. Friend was informed some time ago, my right hon. Friend does not think it would be right, even if it were practicable, for police forces to go into business.
