HC Deb 11 March 1970 vol 797 cc345-6W
Mr. William Price

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will investigate the reasons for the 50-mile traffic queue in the north-bound carriageway of the M1 motorway on 4th March.

Mr. Bob Brown

There was not a 50-mile traffic queue on M1 on 4th March, but we have looked into the delays which occurred on the section south of Leicester on that day and are satisfied that the agent authorities acting on our behalf are alive to their responsibilities.

Measures taken to clear the heavy snowfall, up to 13 inches in places, were hampered by accidents, density of traffic and the problem of abandoned vehicles, some of which were left locked and parked on the carriageway.
