HC Deb 11 March 1970 vol 797 cc303-4W
16. Mr. George Jeger

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware of the plan to close the beet sugar factory at Selby; and, in view of the increased cost to farmers of transporting the beets to other factories, whether he will discuss with the British Sugar Corporation the advisability of a review of the decision.

Mr. Hoy

I am aware of the Corporation's intention to commence the expansion of its York factory in 1973, thus enabling it to close Selby in 1974. This is in accordance with the Corporation's general policy of rationalisation, and my right hon. Friend is satisfied, as he told the House last year, that this is desirable in the national interest.—[Vol. 785, c. 267.]
