HC Deb 09 March 1970 vol 797 c238W
Mr. Ryan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the future activities of the Government's Social Survey in the light of proposals by the Social Science Research Council to promote a Survey Research Unit to execute similar projects.

Mr. Fowler

As regards the future activities of the Government Social Survey Department I can add nothing to the answers given by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister to my hon. Friend the Member for Rutherglen (Mr. Gregor Mackenzie) on 18th December and to my hon. Friend the Member for Feltham (Mr. Russell Kerr) on 3rd March. The possibility of overlap between the unit and that department was carefully considered before approval was given to the unit. The former is intended primarily to serve academic workers, while the latter is fully engaged in meeting the Government's needs.—[Vol. 793, c.410–11; Vol. 797, c. 94.]
