HC Deb 05 March 1970 vol 797 c144W
65. Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will seek powers to require universities and higher education authorities to disclose to students and staff all political and other information received about them.

Mr. Edward Short

No. I agree with the recent statement by the Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors that universities should not keep files about political or religious opinions or affiliations, or political activities within the law. I am glad that the Committee are to have further discussions with the National Union of Students about the difficult issue of the confidentiality of documents.
