HC Deb 05 March 1970 vol 797 c133W
17. Mr. Sheldon

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students he estimates will be in institutions of higher education in October, 1971; what will be the average expenditure on grants per student; and how these figures compare with October 1968.

Mr. Fowler

It is estimated that there will be between 480,000 and 500,000 students in full time higher education in Great Britain in autumn 1971, including about 62,000 in Scotland. This compares with 412,000 in autumn 1968, including 53,000 in Scotland. The average expenditure on grants per award holders in 1968–69 was about £375. The level of grants for 1971–72 has not yet been determined.
