asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what is the average monthly council house rent; and what is the monthly mortgage repayment based on a 20 year 90 per cent. mortgage at the rate of interest recommended by the Building Societies Association on an average-price house in owner- occupation for the latest convenient date; and what were the equivalent figures in each of the past five years.

As the answer contains a number of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT. In April, 1969, the estimated average monthly standard council house rent in England and Wales was £8 18s. 0d. The average net monthly repayment in 1969 in the first year of a mortgage on the terms in the question was £28 12s.
