HC Deb 02 March 1970 vol 797 c4W
52. Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will refuse to allow the participation of the West German Air Force in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nuclear warfare preparations, in view of the fact that this constitutes a breach of the 1954 Western European Union Treaty under which West Germany renounced nuclear weapons.

Mr. Luard

Under the revised Brussels Treaty, the Federal German Government renounced the right to manufacture atomic weapons. This undertaking is in no way inconsistent with the participation of the German Armed Forces in N.A.T.O.'s arrangements for the defence of the N.A.T.O. Treaty area.
