HC Deb 24 July 1970 vol 804 cc269-70W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications whether he will now abolish the surcharge on mail from Rhodesia.

Mr. Chataway

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Haltemprice (Mr. Wall) on 20th July.—[Vol. 804, c.49]

Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications which member governments at the Universal Postal Union are levying surcharge upon, or otherwise discriminating again, mail from Rhodesia.

Mr. Chataway

Since the illegal declaration of independence the following countries have given notice through the Universal Postal Union that they have suspended all postal services with Rhodesia: Algeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Tanzania, Uganda, U.S.S.R. There is no requirement to report to the Union the action being taken on invalid Rhodesian stamps but I understand that few countries have decided to surcharge these stamps.
