Negative Income Tax

Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proposals he has concerning negative income tax; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will set up an inquiry into the feasibility of a negative income tax system designed to alleviate the problems of family poverty; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Dean

My hon. Friend the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, in his reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Kensington, South (Sir B. Rhys Williams) on 14th July, and my noble Friend the Lord Privy Seal, in another place on 15th July, have already confirmed that the Government intend to study this question.—[Vol. 803, c.172.]
