Mr. Douglas-Mann

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many prosecutions for illegal eviction or harassment under the Rent Acts, 1965 to 1968 were instituted by the Islington Borough Council and the Council of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, respectively.

Mr. Channon

My Department does not record this information on a local authority basis, but it can be obtained from the councils.

Mr. Douglas-Mann

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many prosecutions for illegal eviction or harassment under the Rent Acts 1965–68 have been instituted in England and Wales during the years 1966 to 1969; how many of such prosecutions were successful; and what was the average fine imposed.

Mr. Channon

Between the coming into force of the Rent Act, 1965, on 8th December, 1965, and the end of 1969 there were 574 prosecutions for illegal eviction, 383 of them resulting in conviction, and 656 for harassment, 347 of these resulting in conviction. The average fine imposed was just under £20. Sentences of imprisonment were imposed in five cases.
