HC Deb 20 July 1970 vol 804 cc33-4W
Mr. Eadie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what new initiatives he proposes to take to curb the incidence of alcoholism.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The Scottish Health Education Unit is currently conducting a campaign on the problem of alcoholism. At present limited to advising the public that alcoholism is a disease, the campaign will shortly be heightened and its emphasis altered towards informing particularly the families of alcoholics that the disease can be arrested and advising where treatment may be obtained. Steps are also being taken to enlist the help of influential members of the public in putting across the campaign message.

Health services for the treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics are being reviewed by a sub-committee of the Standing Medical Advisory Committee.
