HC Deb 20 July 1970 vol 804 c34W
Mr. Gourlay

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the length of each motorway in Scotland as at 1st July, 1970, the number of public telephones on each motorway, and the average distance between each telephone.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The lengths of motorway in use at 1st July, 1970, were:

Miles
M8 Edinburgh-Glasgow 17.65
M8 Glasgow-Greenock 6.42
M9 Edinburgh-Stirling 5.37
M74 Draffen-Stonehouse (A74)-Glasgow 13.55
M90 Inverkeithing-Perth 9.13

No emergency telephones are available at present but I have let a contract for their provision at intervals of about one mile on the Edinburgh-Glasgow motorway, including the Newbridge-Dechmont section to be opened at the end of this year. The system will be extended to cover all Scottish motorways.
