HC Deb 26 January 1970 vol 794 cc279-80W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of Stare for Defence what progress is being made by his Department with the local authorities in Carlisle and Cumberland regarding handing over of his Department's unused houses for use by incoming key workers into the districts.

Mr. Hattersley

Surplus Ministry of Defence houses are being disposed of to local authorities in Carlisle and Cumberland as follows:—

  • 6 houses at Hillcrest Avenue, Carlisle, are on offer to the City of Carlisle.
  • 2 houses at Scotby are on offer to the Border Rural District Council.

A provisional bid by another Government Department for Hadrian's Camp has not yet been settled but the local authorities have shown interest in the 32 surplus quarters, and the sale of 10 of them to the Cumbria Police Authority is under negotiation.

Disposal of about 120 surplus houses at Anthorn is held up pending the outcome of discussions with the Cumberland River Authority and the Wigton R.D.C. about the adequacy of the sewage works to meet present-day requirements.
