asked the Minister of Technology if he will take steps to maintain employment in Short Brothers and Harland during 1970; and to ensure that a reasonable balance is maintained between research and development and production.

Mr. Carmichael

The level of employment at Shorts must depend upon the company's success in obtaining work in the commercial market. The balance to be maintained between research and development and production is a matter for the board of the company.

asked the Minister of Technology if he will make a statement on the Skyvan programme at Short Brothers and Harland.

I have nothing to add to Shorts' statement of 1st January that the international market made it necessary to reduce the Skyvan production rate to one per month.
