HC Deb 26 January 1970 vol 794 cc237-8W
70. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Technology whether he has considered the representations from the hon. Member for West Ham, North showing that the London Borough of Newham is a dying borough so far as work, work availability and emigration of industry is concerned; and what action he proposes to take to change this situation.

Mr. Varley

I am aware of my hon. Friend's concern but I cannot accept his assessment of the Borough of Newham as a dying borough. Although there has been some loss of jobs within the borough, the change in the number of insured employees compares well with the rest of the London area and there are ample job opportunities within reasonable travelling distance.
