HC Deb 20 January 1970 vol 794 c87W
41. Mr. Henig

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the time needed for public adaptation to the new coinage, he will seek to delay the introduction of compulsory decimalisation until 1st January, 1972.

Mr. Taverne

There is no fixed date for the end of the £ s. d. system. There will be a change-over period, fixed by law to begin on the 15th February, 1971, during which all business, other than banking, can be carried out in either currency using both coinages. The Treasury will be able to bring this period to an end at any time by order, subject to Parliamentary approval, as soon as the country is ready to work exclusively in decimal currency.
