HC Deb 27 February 1970 vol 796 c430W
Mr. Eadie

asked the Minister of Technology what steps he is taking to assist in the reduction of the importation of waste paper; and if he will take steps to stimulate local authorities in their collection from households.

Dr. Ernest A. Davies

Imports are small in relation to total consumption. Nevertheless there is a need to increase local authority collections. The Joint Waste Paper Advisory Council, which represents mills, merchants and local authorities, has been striving to promote waste paper recovery by encouraging the conclusion of long-term contracts at realistic prices. Some progress has been made, but we intend to explore, in consultation with the interests concerned, what more can be done.
