asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much money was given to support the theatre in London and the rest of England, respectively, during the last year for which figures are available.

Grants in support of drama in England in 1968–69 amounted to £1,834,000. This total included £563,000 for the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Companies, both of which tour each year; £190,000 for other London-based theatre companies; and £1,081,000 for the rest of England.
