asked the Minister of Technology what steps he is taking to ensure that the standards of industrial goods produced in the United Kingdom harmonise with the standards obtaining for similar industrial goods in Western Europe.

With the Department's full support, the British Standards Institution is taking a leading part in the harmonisation of industrial standards in Western Europe, as well as at the wider international level. The Department is also represented directly in the Tripartite Committee for Standardisation which over the last three years has enabled United Kingdom, French and German officials to co-operate in accelerating the harmonisation of standards in areas of particular importance.
