asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (i) How many men and women entered the Probation Service in England and Wales each year from 1965–69 inclusive;
  2. (ii) How many left the Probation Service during those years for reasons other than normal retirement;
  3. (iii) Of those who resigned, how many were university graduates or holders of university social work qualifications;
  4. (iv) Whether they will give the appropriate information asked for in (i), (11) and (iii) in respect of the Inner London Probation Service.

Notes:

(1) These figures do not include temporary or part-time officers.

(2) The figures at (i) include persons appointed for the first time as probation officers and those re-appointed after a break in service. The figures for Inner London do not include persons entering that service on transfer from another probation area.

(3) The wastage figures at (ii) and (iii) exclude deaths and retirements on medical grounds as well as age retirements.

(4) The figures for 1965 relate to both the Inner London Probation Service (which dates from 1st April, 1965) and the London Probation Service. Information about wastage of officers with university social work qualifications in respect of the London Services in 1965 is not readily available.
