57. Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Transport if he will make a statement on the progress of the Gateshead A1 fly-over, including the total cost, amount of grant from the Exchequer and amount from the local authority, and the approximate date of completion.

Mr. Bob Brown

This scheme is estimated to cost £3.7 million. Grant assistance of approximately —2.8 million will be paid, leaving £0.9 million to be met by the local authority. Work is so far on schedule and due to be completed by mid-1971.

60. Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Transport what is his estimate of the number of men employed on the construction of the Gateshead A1 flyover; and, of the percentage employed, how many are in permanent residence in the Tyneside travel-to-work area.

About 230 men, of whom four-fifths live permanently in the Tyneside travel-to-work area.
