HC Deb 19 February 1970 vol 796 cc172-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give details of the moneys earned in prison by those Welsh persons who were recently imprisoned for contempt of court by folding advertisement material and inserting it into envelopes; what sort of advertisement material was so enveloped; what charges were made to the advertiser; and what profit is made by his Department on these types of activities.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

They were paid at the rate of 4s. a week for putting trade catalogues into envelopes. It is not the practice to disclose details of individual contracts. As regards the last part of the Question I would refer my hon. Friend to paragraph 54 of the White Paper "People in Prison" (Cmnd. 4214).
