asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the percentage increase in the basic salary of teachers since 1938; and how this compares with the percentage increase in average weekly earnings during the same period.

In 1938 teachers' basic salary scales varied according to the type of school and the part of the country in which they were teaching. No simple comparison is therefore possible with the present unified national scale.
