HC Deb 17 February 1970 vol 796 cc61-2W
55. Mr. Atkinson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will reconsider his decision to close the press shop at the Royal Mint in London, in view of the need to retain the maximum number of skilled and semi-skilled engineering jobs in the London area.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I have very carefully considered representations that the decision to close the Royal Mint on Tower Hill and to transfer all operations to Wales should be reversed, but I am satisfied that the decision which was taken in 1967 was correct then and remains so. I recognise that there will be problems for Tower Hill staff, but employment opportunities are, and are likely to continue to be, as good in London as anywhere in the country.
