76. Mr. Clifford Williamsasked the Minister of Transport, in view of the increased volume of road transport and the need for greater road safety, if he will review the present regulations governing the number and siting of pedestrian crossings.

Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Wales and my Department have already delegated control over the siting of zebra crossings to the local authorities concerned. Individual approval would only be needed if an authority wished to exceed its quota, based on population. We have also issued detailed criteria to help authorities assess where a crossing is justified and likely to improve safety.
