asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many 50p coins were reported to him as being in the hands of banks on 1st January 1970; and what percentage this represents of the total now in circulation.

At the close of business on 31st December 1969 the banks held 64 million 50p coins representing 38 per cent. of the total now issued by the Royal Mint.
