§ Mr. Brooksasked the Minister of Transport whether he will specify the expenditure per head which has been incurred during the 1960s in capital works 441W on the commuter railway services of the London, Manchester and Merseyside conurbations; and what is the corresponding amount of expenditure which has already been authorised for each of these conurbations' railway services during the forthcoming period.

I understand that proposed capital investment in rail services within the conurbations in 1970 is as follows:
Approximate expenditure per head of population £m £ London BRB … 3.5 2.4 LTE … 15.4 Manchester … 1.1 0.5 Merseyside … 0.3 0.2 Consequent on recommendations made in the Report of the Merseyside Land Use Transportation Study it is probable that there will be a substantial increase in capital works on Merseyside in subsequent years. The rôle of rail improvements in the Manchester area is receiving consideration in the S.E.L.N.E.C. Transportation Study.

2. The figures for London relate to the G.L.C. area, but many commuter journeys to London on British Railways start from well outside this area.
