asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what has been the gross cost to public funds of the repatriation of British tourists from sterling and non-sterling areas, respectively, in each of the past six years.

Mr. Foley

During the financial year 1968–69 £158,305 was disbursed on repatriation of distressed British nationals, compared with £258,638, £90,261, £107,198, and an estimated £78,500 in the four preceding years. The figure for 1st April to 31st December, 1969, is £103,753. Separate figures for tourists are not available. £419,177 out of £796,655 was for repatriation from non-sterling areas.
