§ Mr. Wall
asked the Minister for Overseas Development what is the total sum of grants and loans, respectively, made by Her Majesty's Government to the Government of Kenya in the five years 483W prior to independence and in the years since independence, respectively.

Kenya became independent on the 12th December, 1963.

§ Mr. Wall
asked the Minister for Overseas Development what specific grants or loans have been made towards the assistance of compassionate cases in Kenya by Her Majesty's Government since the independence of Kenya.

§ Mr. Wood
Since independence Her Majesty's Government has made available to the Kenya Government the following sums for the purchase of farms in compassionate cases:

1964—£400,000 grant and £261,000 loan.

l965—£365,000 loan.

1966—£233,000 loan.

§ Mr. Wall
asked the Minister for Overseas Development what amounts of grants and loans have been given by Her Majesty's Government towards the one million acre and 400,000 acre resettlement schemes in Kenya, respectively; and what is the number of European farms purchased and the approximate number of Africans resettled on these farms under each of these schemes.

Her Majesty's Government have made available grants of £10,135,000 and loans of £10,039,000 towards the million acre scheme. A further loan of £6 million was made available for land transfer schemes for 1969–70, in which it was expected that up to 400,000 acres of British-owned mixed farming land would be transferred.

The following is the information:
£4,150,000 of this was for the purchase of farms by the Kenya Agricultural Development Corporation, £1,300,000 was for the transfer of farms through the Kenya Agricultural Finance Corporation and £550,000 was for the "Harambee" settlement scheme.
Over 700 European farms have been purchased under the million acre scheme and about 200 British farms will have been purchased under the 1966–70 programme. More than 32,000 African families have been settled under the million acre scheme. The number of families settled under the "Harambee" scheme is not yet known.
