HC Deb 01 December 1970 vol 807 cc356-7W
Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

asked the Secretark of State for Scotland why he implemented the terms of the Plant Health (Scotland) Act, 1967 and the Destructive Pests and Diseases of Plants (Scotland) Order, 1966 to destroy a crop of potatoes as a result of an unsupported statement by the South African Government to the effect that wart disease had been found in a quantity of potatoes imported into South Africa from this country, without first making investigations on his own account at the place in South Africa where the wart disease is alleged to have been found.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

No entire crop of potatoes was destroyed under statutory powers following the receipt of information from South Africa. As a precautionary measure two small consignments were destroyed at the request of my Department. Compensation was paid and accepted by those concerned as final settlement and discharge of any claims in respect of potatoes destroyed.
