asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many remand homes there are in Scotland; where they are situated; what numbers each accommodates by regulation; and what is the present population of each at the latest convenient date.

In 1969–70 about £25 million was paid in housing subsidies to local authorities in Scotland. The housing subsidies to the Scottish Special Housing Association and the New Town Development Corporations amounted, in addition, to about £7 million.

In the same year income tax relief on mortgage interest payments on houses in Scotland was about £7 million.
