asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why private patients visiting hospitals for X-ray treatment are required to sign for acceptance of the charges over a 6d. stamp.

The undertaking to pay the hospital charges is a memorandum of agreement between the patient and the hospital and a 6d. stamp duty is therefore chargeable under the Stamp Act, 1891.
