HC Deb 08 April 1970 vol 799 cc87-8W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied that sufficient facilities exist in Carlisle and Cumberland for the education of handicapped children; and if he will make a statement.

Miss Bacon

Her Majesty's Inspectorate are at present engaged, with the cooperation of the Cumberland authority, in a survey of provision for senior educationally subnormal pupils. When this is complete, the Department will discuss with the authority its provision for this group of handicapped pupils. For other handicaps, whose incidence is relatively small, provision is frequently made on a regional or national basis and authorities with small or scattered populations do not normally provide special schools within their own area.
