HC Deb 07 April 1970 vol 799 c42W
Mr. Peter M. Jackson

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what was the average cost per acre of land acquired for housing by local authorities in 1969 in inner London, the Inner London Education Authority area, in outer London, and in the remainder of England and Wales, respectively together with the corresponding average cost per acre for the year 1959.

Mr. Freeson

The average cost of land acquired by local authorities under the Housing Act is estimated as £71,000 per acre in 1969 in the case of Inner London (the Inner London Education Authority area), £51,000 per acre in Outer London and £7,000 per acre in the remainder of England and Wales. These averages conceal wide variations, to such an extent that there is no consistency in them even from year to year; changes in the composition of purchases could easily lead to a fall in the averages when land prices generally are rising.

Comparable information is not available for 1959.
