HC Deb 12 November 1969 vol 791 c101W
81. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if, in view of the correspondence concerning Mr. W. Ashworth, of Salford, who rose through the ranks to become an Army captain, he will waive the requirement of General Certificate of Education and Certificate of Secondary Education passes for applicants for posts in cases where such examinations did not exist when the applicants were young, and if they have the necessary qualifications.

Mr. Hattersley

No. Except where there is a special need or in shortage areas it is the practice of the Ministry of Defence, as of all other Government Departments, to recruit only candidates who have the stipulated G.C.E. or equivalent academic qualifications to permanent clerical posts.
