HC Deb 04 November 1969 vol 790 cc87-8W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to what extent the Government's policies of reducing food prices and the cost of living will require to be amended or adjusted in view of the policy of joining the Common Market.

Mr. Luard

To discuss any such amendment or adjustment would be premature. Any calculations of the effects on the cost of living in this country of entering the European Communities must be based on a series of different assumptions concerning their future policies and other factors. As my hon. Friend knows, assessments of these effects are at present being undertaken and will be published when they are completed.
