HC Deb 03 November 1969 vol 790 c66W
Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Minister of Transport what representations he has received for an increase in the maximum permitted weight, length and noise of goods vehicles; and what action he proposes to take.

Mr. Bob Brown

Vehicle manufacturers and operators have asked, on grounds of improved transport efficiency and economics, for maximum gross weight limits to be increased to the following:

  1. (a) 44 tons for articulated lorries,
  2. (b) 56 tons for a combination of rigid lorry and draw-bar trailer,
  3. (c) various mainly smaller increases for intermediate sized vehicles.

They have also asked for an increase of a half-metre (20 inches) in the 15-metre overall length limit of articulated lorries to facilitate safer designs of tractive units for transporting 40-foot containers.

The Department is looking into all aspects of these proposals and is discussing technical implications with the industry. As soon as there is something positive to discuss we will consult other interests including those concerned with safety and amenity. If changes are proposed following these discussions we shall give ample opportunity for public debate about them. A final decision cannot be expected for many months.

I have had no representations for an increase in permitted noise levels; on the contrary, we are discussing reductions in noise levels with the motor industry.
