HC Deb 24 July 1969 vol 787 c434W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total amount of money derived from public funds spent on the maintenance of orchestras in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively, during the years 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968, respectively.

Miss Jennie Lee

The following grants and guarantees were made by the Arts Council of Great Britain to orchestras based in England and Scotland:

England Scotland
£ £
1965–66 342,300 62,500
1966–67 522,800 84,785
1967–68 533,200 105,000
1968–69 591,500 113,320

Apart from the B.B.C. Welsh Orchestra, there are no permanent professional orchestras in Wales, which however derives benefit from touring undertaken by orchestras based outside. Comprehensive information is not available about grants from other public sources.
