asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give the names of the polytechnics which have recently increased their hostel charges; by what authority such increases were made; and what were the amounts of the increases involved in actual and percentage terms.

Mr. Short

It has long been my Department's policy that the level of charges in hostels attached to further education establishments should cover all the running costs except loan charges and certain other items. An inquiry into costs in the academic year 1966–67 showed that most charges fell well below this level. In June 1968 the Local Education Authorities Committee on Inter Authority
